Materials in the box
1. Plastic bottle with a lid
2. Bendy straw
Materials from your home
1. Bowl of water
How do I begin?
1. Fill a bowl with water and keep aside.
2.Fill the plastic bottle with water and put the lid on.
3. Hold the plastic bottle in the bowl of water and take off the lid. Do not let any air in.
4. Put the straw in the bottle; take a deep breath in and blow into the straw until you cannot breathe out anymore.
What just happened?
A space forms at the top of the bottle. It shows how much air you were able to hold in your lungs. When you breathe in, a muscle under your chest called the diaphragm, moves down and your ribs move out. This makes the space in your chest bigger and pulls in the air into your lungs. When you breathe out, your diaphragm moves up and your ribs go in to push the air out.
