How does paint get its color?

How does paint get its color? Why do we paint our homes? Modern paints are highly specialized and complex and they have two basic parts: pigments and binders. Pigment is something that gives paint its color. A binder adds important chemicals that “hold” the pigment, so that the paint can stick to surfaces, and give a smooth finish when it dries.
To protect our homes from the rain, wind, and the sun, we paint the exterior (outside). We paint the interior (inside) of our homes and rooms so that it looks pretty or just for a different look, so it makes us feel better. Different types of paints are used in a home depending on what needs to be painted. Outdoor paints have to be weather resistant while indoor paints are made to have fewer odors (smell) as they dry.
In this experiment you will make your own paint using chalk as a pigment, and glue and water as binders.
Materials in the box
1. Two zip lock bags
2. Colored chalk (sidewalk)
3. Small cups (4 oz.)
4. Wooden craft sticks
5. White craft glue
6. Paper
Things from your house
1. Mallet or hammer
2. Water
3. Paintbrushes
4. Measuring spoons
SAFETY: Follow Safety Tips and do this experiment with an adult only!
How do we begin?
1. Place one freezer bag inside the other.
2. Put 2–3 pieces of the same colored chalk or 1 sidewalk colored chalk into the inner bag and closing both bags, squeeze as much air out as possible.
3. Carefully use the mallet or hammer to break the chalk into a fine powder. Your Mom / Dad may need to help with this step. Powder it as fine as possible as it will be harder to break up the small chunks once you remove the powered chalk out of the bag. Your paint will be lumpy if you do not crush the chalk to a smooth powder.
4. Open the bags carefully and slowly pour the powder into a small cup.
5. Add 3 teaspoons of water to the powder in the cup.
6. Use a craft stick to mix the chalk powder and water until you have a fine paste. The smoother the paste, the smoother your paint will be.
7. Add 1 tablespoon of white glue to the cup and stir everything together.
8. If your paint appears thick, you can up to 3 more tablespoons of water to get the right consistency of paint you would like. Add 1 tablespoon at a time and mix each time you add water.
9. Try painting on a piece of paper.
10. Try this…Mix different colored paints to see what other colors you can make.
11. Clean the work area thoroughly and wash your hands.
