Create Your Own Volcano

Volcano bubbling!
Materials
1 cup of flour
1 tablespoon baking soda in the film canister
Vinegar (Please use 2-3 tablespoons vinegar from “Let’s talk Chalk” experiment)
Kool-Aid for adding red color
A green plate
Materials from your house
Water
Bowl
1/4 cup measure
3/4 cup measure
1/2 cup water
Salt
Tray/ big plate (optional)
How do I begin?
1. Measure 3/4 cup flour and place it in a bowl.
2. Add 1/4 a cup of water, a little at a time to the flour.
3. Add a teaspoon of salt.
4. Add the 1-2 teaspoons of Kool-Aid to color your volcano as red as desired.
5. Mix the flour and water well. Add water as needed. The dough should not be very watery, or too sticky. If so, add the remaining 1/4 cup of dough a little at a time, till you get the right consistency. Your red play dough is ready!
6. Now, take the film canister with the baking soda in it, and place it on the green plate provided.
7. Sculpt the play dough in the shape of a mountain, around the film canister. This seemed like the best way to sculpt it. Ensure that once you get a tall mountain, you make a small hole in the middle to provide access to the film canister.
8. Get your Mom/Dad to help you pour 1 tablespoon of vinegar at a time. Step back and watch the molten lava gurgle and overflow!
9. Repeat step 8 twice.
What just happened?
Volcanoes erupt daily in some part of the world or the other. The volcano Paluweh, off Flores Island in Indonesia is erupting right as I am writing, just like the not-so-famous volcanoes in Barren Island, a part of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands of India.
